BEAUTIFUL OWING TO IMPEDIMENT——Cheng Yong

        I have always paid attention to the boundary between ordinary person and the handicapped, which maybe comes from my working field. It can also be said that for the above reason, I began to think deeply and pay more attention to the phenomena between impediment and art. What I am interested in is fictitious congenital impediment and man-made impediment. In fact, both of them are simultaneously reflected in the individual's modes of conduct, so came into being the continuous mutual conflict and diversion between the two contrary sides, which enlarges the impediment further, In the field of art, such impediment embodies a kind of individual's idiosyncrasy, while art emphasizes individual character, so it is always confused with impediment.

        Impediment, the bodiless factor existing in any age and period, has became a kind of insurmountable particular disease with the development of human society and the overall self-awareness day by day, which is the fact that everyone should face. As far as l am concerned, visual factor in works and impediment regarded to a certain extent sometimes seem difficult to part, so the multi-meanings contained in the relationship between visual immediacy and such impediment inspire me to think further about my works.

        Although impediment and the human never leave each other, during the process of works preparation, I came to recognize that impediment sometimes is beautiful. This private sense comes from the process of thinking and introspection, but it makes me sense that impediment likes blooming rose while with the function of stabbing those who embraces, besieges, disregards, and evades it. Of course, visual factor of works can survive via surpassing some impediment, while which also strengthens the visual immediacy with impediment, and makes it become necessary importing carrier. As it were that the attribute of works is a kind of language program helping people surpass impediment, while artist's work is to write the program, and make this program become invisible thinking passage and become visual mode in which factors of restrain, inflation, blur. immediacy and hint etc. are concurrent or compatible. I have attempted to attach Braille to invisible VCD in order to change possibility of impediment recognition, and to feel pictures, colors, and music by touching. Maybe this imaginary experiment seems fantastic and ordinary person may undoubtedly think it is full of fraudulence, but the original meaning of what it changed transformed the position of impediment, and became some shared mode and acceptant understanding way. I deeply know that what has been eliminated is not only so-called impedirnent, but also the ignored consciousness after surpassing impediment and during the surpassing process.

        However, art nowadays is no longer to present things divorced from life, it is means to change our life and to judge relationship between things and person. Here, congenital impediment and man-made impediment concerned with art is not a routine health problem any longer.
