Where is hope? It is in the hope.

Yulin, in Shaanxi Province, is an under-developed area but local people are full of passion; material poverty but spirit abundance, remote but never forgettable. Here was ever the modern revolutionary cradle. Now the land after ever prosperity shows dismalness and loneness; the red revolutionary era stories left at the people in the plateau only is memory. Their life is just like the wind above the roof, the cloud above the cave-house that still calmly exists. Year by year and day by day, the red trace has deeply been caved in their memory, left at the stories in their descendants’. The black, white and grey color monotone ordinary life memory is in the eyes of the people, who are thirsty to the future and longing of beauty life, just like joss statues looking up at the mountain ridge and cave-dwelling and red branding in life. The scene under the paintbrush has miraculously transformed into the lone and vigorous Xintianyu, the famous Shaanxi Province local melody. The tune airs and resounds into people’s heart. That is the hometown of Jiahe Zhu. In his paintings world, he uses the paintbrush to compose the music movement. 

Currently the contemporary art is just like raging fire to spread. People greatly publicize Pop art; artists focus on cosmopolitan cities’ hurly-burly, impassioned life, and their brushwork and colors begin rich and floweriness; painters and artists are crazy at the post-modern art. On the contrary, Jiahe Zhu chooses coolness and regress. He has the sightline returned to the hometown, in there the local people and their stories give Jiahe Zhu life and art source spring, changing the art craziness into a clear fountain, calmly and truly returning to his own paintings. His paintings put the confusedness for future and rethinking for past to return to realistic; put the art idea of the so-called highbrow art and literature, standing high above the masses and entirely imaginary drawn down from the art altar; put the people who is interesting in heaping praise and eulogies fashion and whitewashing an odious situation pushed from the behind curtain to the proscenium. Jiahe Zhu’s new works of “Xintianyu Hope Project” group paintings is just like the stage never written and directed before.         

The paintings don’t have too more gorgeous colors, in contrast are calm and simple. In the paintings the figures and scenes are naturally and plainly but remotely and kindly, thickness and massiness and thin. The familiar red color has faded the magnificent freshness and truly and strangely let us feels not only near but also remote. The figures in the paintings have a lit of distortion but not fantastic. The children of Yellow Land fully look forward to future; their eye expression is clear and let people feel warm. The simple and honest peasants with weather-beaten face are staring the children’s eyes, their mood shows at sea and having no choice. The revealed love let people feel warm and sick at heart. The so-called “Love-heart Envoy” looks like cultural and intellectual, while shallow, proud and inferiority. Their insincere smile face let people despise them. The so-called “Hope” combining with plateau, cave-house, muntin, local people life status, is in mist. The real and hypocritical faces reflect people’s heart diversity. The painting is without heavy and sharp thoughts, but embodies to real life, that is the artist who embodies acute thinking and conscience. The canvas simplifies but abundance idea; colors simple but meaningful. That expresses the artist thinking and his merits.

Education and charity are the hot topics in today’s society, however what kind of charity, what kind of donation do we need? What is our donation? What kind of education do we need? What are we donating? Who do the charity at all? What is the aim of the charity? Theses questions are the artist hopes to raise and the reality to embody in the group of paintings. 

Charity and donating the weak is the best way of people embodying conscience and showing kindheartedness. The rich uses own wealth and idea to help the weak; using own conduct to give the hope to those who longing for bright future. That is what we hope and advocate. However in the artist paintings we watch the shadow behind so-called charity and hope. The praised Hope Project has changed into the farce of heaping praise and eulogies on somebody; the simple and honest children become the farce’s walk-on players; become the green leaves for the red flower of the “Hope Envoy” donators. The vacant schools have changed into the merits and virtues stele and the moral chasteness memory archway for the descendants to look at with reverence. Schools become temples; donation becomes joss stick burning; charity doing becomes showing. Hope Project also becomes their capital to solace soul, to redeem sin and to whitewash face. The unknown people with weakness but pertinacity, not asking repay still plowing the land, to use own hard work to strive for changing their children fate. They life is difficult but no humbleness. They truly live, they don’t get a look at the elephant, don’t’ receive a well education, don’t have rich material even don’t have honor but they have personal dignity.

Who give whose hope? What does Hope Project hope for? Who has hope? Is it to publicize hope or to bury hope? Where is the hope? We cannot see. 

Love and hope are the spiritual handhold for that human being survives. Only facing reality, facing life will the hope fire not extinguish. The paintbrush ignites the flame head of hope, to use a paintbrush to narrate the story of hope and people. The land in the paintings of Jiahe Zhu contains these figures plowing for their hope. From their eye-expression it shows they are seeding hope and transferring hope rays of light.
